About Event

Free Leaseholders is delighted to welcome Michael Teys from Australia for an exclusive lecture titled “Strata Title: A Perfectly Imperfect Model for Commonhold Revival in England and Wales”.

Join us as we explore Australia’s system of strata title, governing the homes of millions of Australians and one of the country’s biggest yet unsung exports, imitated across the globe from New Zealand and Canada to Singapore, Dubai, and South Africa. At a pivotal moment for flat living in England and Wales as the UK Government unveils its plan to phase out the controversial landlord-controlled leasehold regime with a second generation commonhold, we will hear from a leading authority on strata title and discuss what lessons, if any, can be gleaned from Aussie success.

Mr Teys, who has supported this campaign from its inception, is a strata management consultant and researcher. He is at the forefront of efforts to promote transparency and ethical practices in Australia’s block management sector, driving reform. He has over 30 years’ experience as a strata lawyer and academic and has owned 11 strata management agencies throughout Australia. He has recently completed a Master of Philosophy (Built Environment) studying mixed-use developments and urban redevelopment. He lectures and writes widely about strata management issues in Australia and internationally.

This will be a thought-provoking talk for leaseholders and all who care about law reform, the housing crisis, and the need to bring England and Wales out of the dark ages through democratic resident control of flats.

Note: Attendance is free, but spots will be allocated through a combination of early requests, direct invitations, and a lottery to help ensure a fair and balanced mix of attendees.
