About Event

How do we, as artists, create work that means something? How do we move from making art that decorates to art that communicates? This lecture is for artists early in their creative development who are asking: how do I make my work more personal, more direct, more intentional? Segrove explores the practice of meaning-making, and what it takes to build the trust in yourself to say something real.

About the Speaker:

Daniel Segrove (@dsegrove) is a 34-year-old artist living and working in San Francisco, California. His work focuses on his perspective on life, identity, and empathy. He paints and draws people who are close to him or whose stories he can relate to. His style includes meticulous studies of anatomy and form, as well as pieces that explore more emotional and expressive themes. He works mainly in mixed media on paper, exploring many different applications of various mediums. Over the past decade, his work has been shown in galleries across the United States and internationally.

About Underpainting Collective:

Underpainting Collective is a cooperatively-run art school currently based in Berkeley, California. We grew out of the Oakland Atelier of Classical Realism, a school with over 55 years of fine arts instruction rooted in the East Bay, and we carry that legacy forward while making it our own.

We are students, teachers, and working artists whose dream is to build a dynamic community hub where serious artistic training lives alongside creative experimentation, mutual support, and a genuine commitment to social justice.
