Digit x WiseTalks: A whirlwind tour of how we build resilient systems, manage fleets securely at scale, and use AI to turn data into insight
Welcome to WiseTalks!
Join us at Wise’s Tallinn office for a Digit official side event dedicated to real-world platform engineering.
We’re bringing together a team of Wise platform engineers – from fresh perspectives to seasoned builders who have spent years architecting Wise’s core systems – to share raw technical depth, honest trade-offs, and actionable insights on building shared foundations at scale.
Agenda:
17:30 - Doors open
18:00-18:10 - Karyna Karpenko, Recruitment Lead
“Welcome to Wise”
18:10-18:40 - Fabio Hora, Platform Engineer
“From Dependency Drift to Developer Confidence: Building WJP and WJSP”
Keeping software dependencies secure, current, and consistent across hundreds of repositories is not a problem individual teams can solve repeatedly. This talk shares how we approached it with Wise Java Platform (WJP) and Wise JavaScript Platforms (WJSP): opinionated, reusable foundations that make the secure and maintainable path the default.
We will cover the engineering problems these platforms address; from version fragmentation and upgrade fatigue to supply-chain controls, and the practical design choices behind them. Expect concrete lessons on centralized dependency management, platform composition, compatibility boundaries, and preserving team autonomy without sacrificing consistency. The session is aimed at engineers and technical leads building shared foundations at scale.
18:40-19:10 - Mohammad Areeb Siddiqui, Platform Engineer
“AI-Driven Analytics: Secure, Contained and Auditable Reporting Tools”
Analysts increasingly reach for AI coding assistants to move faster – spinning up their own scripts, repos, and workflows on the fly. That speed comes with real risk: sensitive data ending up in the wrong place, secret keys leaking into logs or code, no record of what an LLM touched or why. Locking it all down isn't an option either – analysts need room to experiment.
We built a sandbox that gives them that room without the exposure. Every session runs in an isolated microVM, cut off from other services and spun up and torn down on demand. Network access is tightly scoped, with a dedicated connection instead of open internet routes. And every call to the LLM provider passes through a gateway that logs and controls what goes in and out. I'll walk through why we landed on this shape, the trade-offs between containment and usability, and what it took to make "secure" and "auditable" the default instead of an afterthought.
19:10-19:40 - Kristo Kuusküll, Principal Engineer
“No two-phase commit: consistency as a library, not infrastructure”
Wise runs on hundreds of backend services, each with its own database, and money has to move across them without ever being lost or paid out twice. Two-phase commit is not an option at that scale, so we use the well-known answers: sagas, the transactional outbox, event sourcing. The interesting question isn't which patterns – it's where they live. The common route is infrastructure: change data capture, a pipeline, a platform team to own it. We chose libraries instead, so a service needs nothing beyond the database and Kafka it already has, and one team can build and run the whole thing without waiting on anyone. I'll go through that decision – what it bought us in velocity, what it cost, and why our product engineers never have to think about idempotency or double payouts at all.
19:40-21:00 - Drinks, Snacks, Networking 🌮
You’ll get a rare look under the hood at how Wise handles cross-service consistency, fleet security, and data infrastructure – with plenty of time to ask questions and learn directly from experienced technical leads.
Come for the engineering insights, stay for the conversation, drinks, and snacks. 🌮
