Turning Global Advanced Technologies into New Business Opportunities for Japanese Companies

What does it take to turn cutting-edge technologies from around the world into new business opportunities for Japanese companies?

Rhapsody Venture Partners, a US-based venture capital firm specializing in Hard Tech, has spent the past nine years fostering open innovation with Japanese companies and corporate venture capital (CVC) firms through its Innovation Partner Program (IPP), alongside its investment activities.

In this seminar, we welcome Mike Fuerstman, Partner at Rhapsody Venture Partners, who will share the firm’s investment philosophy as a Hard Tech VC, its track record of collaboration with Japanese companies through the IPP, and the key outcomes and lessons learned from nine years of experience.

How do Japanese and Western companies differ in their approaches to open innovation? What distinguishes successful collaborations with overseas startups from those that fail to meet expectations? Drawing on Rhapsody’s practical experience as a venture capital firm, Mike will explore these questions through concrete case studies.

In addition, Shigeru Nakagawa, who manages Rhapsody’s IPP liaison office and serves as the representative of the Japanese subsidiary of Swedish fuel cell technology company Cell Impact, will share insights into the challenges of collaboration between overseas advanced technology companies and large Japanese corporations—and how to overcome them. His perspective is informed by years of joint development experience with Japanese automotive OEMs.

Beyond scouting startups and making investments, how can companies establish meaningful technology partnerships and turn them into sustainable business outcomes?

This seminar offers practical insights for Japanese companies and CVCs exploring collaboration opportunities with overseas Hard Tech startups.
