Africa’s Energy Reality: Beyond the “Transition” Narrative
Africa’s Energy Reality: Beyond the “Transition” Narrative
Across much of the world, the phrase “energy transition” implies a shift from established energy systems toward cleaner alternatives. But for many African countries, the reality is fundamentally different.
Much of Sub-Saharan Africa is not transitioning away from mature energy systems, it is still in the process of building the energy infrastructure required to drive industrialization, economic growth, and improved quality of life.
This edition of the Africa Energy Dialogue Series explores a critical question:
Is “energy transition” the right framework for Africa?
The session will examine how Africa’s development priorities challenge dominant global climate narratives and what a truly just, practical, and development-oriented energy pathway should look like for the continent.
Through evidence-based and solution-focused discussion, policymakers, researchers, industry leaders, and practitioners will explore:
Whether current global transition frameworks adequately reflect African realities
The relationship between energy access, industrialization, and climate goals
How affordability, reliability, and resilience shape Africa’s energy choices
What a “just and realistic” energy future means for African economies
About the IAP Energy Dialogue Series
The IAP Energy Dialogue Series is a platform designed to bridge the gap between research, policy, and practice in shaping the continent’s energy future.
The series brings together policymakers, industry leaders, researchers, and practitioners to engage in evidence-based discussions on energy access, security, development, and climate change. Recognizing that Africa’s energy priorities differ significantly from those of developed economies, the platform focuses on context-specific strategies that support economic growth, inclusivity, resilience, and sustainable development.
By translating complex research and data into actionable insights and amplifying real-world experiences, the Dialogue Series aims to foster collaboration and support practical energy solutions aligned with Africa’s socio-economic realities.
