About Event

How do authors build intensity? Make you cry? Or change your mind?

Recently, I took a class at Stanford where I, with others, explored questions of craft. It was one of my favorite experiences, and would like to do it with this group. In this session, we will read two very short stories (1 fiction, 1 essay) and discuss how authors wielded their craft to communicate a message.

We will start with the essay Face of the Spider (attached below)

61.3 KB

We will then move onto Off, a fictional short story.

Off.pdf
715.1 KB

Both are short, and I highly recommend reading them and printing them out beforehand to underline and note things you like. However, if you are pressed for time, would prioritize reading Face of the Spider.
