Cap on Maritime Transport : A Solution to Better Protect Our Oceans and Rethink Our Economy
As maritime transport is ever expanding, our oceans' ecological indicators are flashing red.
Often portrayed as an environmentally friendly mode of transport due to its lower greenhouse gas emissions, maritime transport nevertheless has enormous impacts on biodiversity, and mitigation measures are – at best - being undermined by the sector’s steady growth.
Building on IPBES conclusions about the necessity to address the underlying causes of biodiversity loss, SNAP Québec is advocating for a yet unconsidered solution to reverse marine and coastal biodiversity loss: setting caps on maritime traffic.
During the event, we will present our Blue paper on establishing a cap on maritime transport in the St. Lawrence seaway, one of North America’s biggest commercial routes and welcome feedback and comments on our proposal.
