THE QUEER SCENE IN BERLIN BEFORE National Socialism ✦ Alternative tour in English · Schöneberg, Berlin · 2 hours

In the 1920s, Berlin was the queer capital of the world. Lesbian clubs, sexual research institutes, and cabaret artists challenging gender norms every night in Schöneberg. A way of life that seemed unstoppable, until it wasn’t.

This alternative tour of Schöneberg brings to life the stories of those who built that scene: Lotte Hahm and her lesbian resistance network, Dora Richter and Berlin’s first gender-affirming surgeries, Claire Waldoff singing on stage in a suit and tie. This is Berlin’s queer history, a history that Nazism tried to erase, and that we’re walking through to ensure it doesn’t disappear.
