About Event

About Event

For generations, a detached house with a yard represented the typical image of a family home - the Canadian dream. But as that dream becomes a pipe dream in cities like Vancouver and Toronto, what comes next?

Join the Missing Middle Initiative and About Here for a debut screening of “Is This Canada’s Next Family Home?”, a film exploring the emergence of multiplexes across the country, and the forces that shape them. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion on the future of family-oriented housing in Canada.

Speakers

Cara Stern

Cara Stern is a journalist dedicated to helping people understand that our economy is a series of policy choices, and that different choices are possible. She is a co-host and a founding member of the Missing Middle Podcast, where she speaks with economist Mike Moffatt and guests about the forces reshaping Canada's middle class, from housing affordability to demographic change and public policy.

Before joining the Missing Middle Initiative, Cara spent nearly a decade as a producer for The Agenda with Steve Paikin on TVO. There, she translated complex policy debates into compelling television, with a focus on housing, urban planning, and politics. Her work on middle-class housing earned a King Charles III Coronation Medal in 2025. Cara holds a Bachelor of Journalism from Carleton University, with minors in Sociology and History.

Dr. Mike Moffatt

Dr. Mike Moffatt is the founding Director of the University of Ottawa's Missing Middle Initiative (MMI). Prior to founding MMI, Mike served as the Chief Innovation Fellow for the Government of Canada, advising Deputy Ministers on innovation policy and emerging trends.

He has also previously held the titles of Founding Director of the PLACE Centre, Senior Director of Policy at the Smart Prosperity Institute, Interim Director at the Lawrence National Centre for Policy and Management, Director of Policy at Canada 2020, and Chief Economist at the Mowat Centre, University of Toronto.

Mike has held a number of academic positions, including Assistant Professor at Ivey Business School, Western University, where he taught courses on global macroeconomics and geopolitical risk for nearly two decades.

Uytae Lee

Uytae Lee produces videos that educate and engage viewers on urban planning issues. He is the founder of ‘About Here’, a creative studio and YouTube channel dedicated to helping people understand their cities better.
