A Conversation with Sydney Maubert and Arsimmer McCoy
Still Tippin’: Art, Migration, and Landings
Join artist Sydney Maubert and curator Arsimmer McCoy for a conversation surrounding Still Tippin’, an installation exploring migration, settlement, and the cultural environments shaped by communities in motion.
Landings considers more than the moment of arrival. It speaks to the places where people establish homes, build relationships, develop institutions, and contribute to the social and cultural character of their surroundings. Across generations, these environments become expressions of both the histories people carry with them and the circumstances they encounter.
Through the lens of art, architecture, geography, and cultural expression, the conversation examines how migration transforms established neighborhoods and gives rise to new communities. From the movement of Black Southerners into northern American cities during the Great Migration to the continuing movement of populations across the Caribbean and into South Florida, these histories reveal the complex relationships between aspiration, displacement, opportunity, and belonging.
The discussion invites audiences to consider how communities are formed, how cultural traditions travel and evolve, and how the places people inhabit become reflections of their collective experiences.
What happens after arrival, when the promise of a destination encounters the realities of building a life?
