Unlocking Transparency in UK Fisheries
Hosted by the APPG for Anti-Corruption and Responsible Tax and the APPG for International Conservation, this panel and Q & A event brings together MPs, policymakers, industry and civil society to discuss the findings of ClientEarth and the Coalition for Fisheries Transparency's recent report, Whose Boat Is This? and the key reforms required to identify who is really profiting from illegal fishing activity.
Illegal fishing is one of the most profitable natural resource crimes in the world. It is linked to serious organised crime, labour abuse and illicit finance. Left unchecked, it can cause serious damage to marine ecosystems and fish populations. The UK currently has no effective system to publicly identify who ultimately owns or profits from many fishing vessels. This creates a gap that allows bad actors to operate without scrutiny. Lack of Ultimate Beneficial Ownership (UBO) transparency is a key enabler of Illegal Unreported and Unregulated fishing, and together the panellists will discuss routes to protect fishers and safeguard fish stocks for generations to come.
