Sex Ed Book Club #1: Come As You Are - Emily Nagoski
If you've ever wondered why your desire doesn't look like what you've been told it should, why stress kills your libido, why you and your partner seem to be wired completely differently, or why so much of what we've been taught about women's sexuality just doesn't add up, this book is for you.
Come As You Are by Dr. Emily Nagoski is one of the most important, science-backed, myth-busting books ever written about women's sexuality. It's the book I wish every woman read in her twenties. And then again in her thirties. And forties. And fifties and sixties...
This evening, we're getting into it together!
What our sex ed book club is:
A women-only, no-pressure online book club where we chat about the most important themes of the book, how they show up in real life, and what it all means for us. Read the whole thing? Amazing. Read half? Welcome. Didn't read it at all but the topic intrigues you? Also welcome. This is not homework. This is a conversation.
I'll be bringing my paper copy because I'm a chronic highlighter and I love a marked-up book. If reading isn't your thing, the audiobook is brilliant too. And if you'd rather just show up and listen, that works perfectly fine!
Some of the themes we'll explore together_
The dual control model and why your brain might be hitting the brakes without you realising
Responsive vs spontaneous desire (and why neither one is "broken")
Context, stress, and the sexual response
The cultural messages we've all absorbed about what women's sexuality "should" look like, and what actually happens when we let those go.
We'll move through discussion, breakout rooms in smaller groups, and plenty of space to laugh, reflect, and connect. You'll never have to share anything you don't want to. You'll leave with new insights, fresh ideas, and probably a few "oh, THAT explains so much" moments.
Our vibe?
Warm. Curious. Shame-free. There will be "wait, that part blew my mind" moments. There will be quiet "oh shit, that explains so much" realisations. There will be zero judgment, zero pressure, and a whole lot of laughter. You'll leave with a deeper understanding of yourself, and maybe some desire to explore further!
Who this is for:
Women who are curious about the themes in Come As You Are, whether you've read every page, listened on 1.5x speed, skimmed a chapter, or just heard about the book and want in on the conversation. All experience levels welcome!
