âWhat if Quebecâs clean power crossed the Atlantic (and vice-versa)?
âThe NATO-L project (North Atlantic Transmission One-Link) proposes a series of multi-thousand-kilometre high-voltage DC, 6-gigawatt (3 x 2GW) subsea links connecting northeastern North America with Europeâs North Sea region. The idea is to use the six-hour time difference, and wind and sun that peak at different times on each side of the ocean, to trade renewable power in both directions. With the Strait of Hormuz crisis exposing the cost of fossil fuel dependence, itâs one of the boldest energy infrastructure ideas on the table anywhere. For Montreal, with Quebecâs hydropower and long experience moving electricity over great distances, thereâs also a local question: where do we fit in and what benefits can we expect from it?
âWeâre excited to welcome Laurent Segalen, one of the projectâs developers, to discuss the vision behind NATO-L, the technical, regulatory and financial hurdles ahead, and what it could mean for Quebec.
