Guest Lecture @CIIS | Human Development: Preteens and Early Adolescents in the Digital Age
The phone, the game, the algorithm: they're all in the room with us.
A Human Development guest lecture, hosted by TiNT with the California Institute of Integral Studies.
Tech isn't only a behavior problem to fix. For today's preteens and early adolescents, it's part of the world they're growing up in. This session looks at how social media, gaming, smartphones, and emerging AI interact with identity, attention, emotional regulation, peer relationships, autonomy, achievement, and family conflict.
The lecture helps you distinguish developmentally normative technology use from family-system dynamics, adaptive behaviours, and real areas of clinical concern. That's the judgment call parents and schools will bring to you.
How the 45 minutes run
20 min: lecture
15 min: case-vignette discussion
10 min: Q&A
You'll leave with
A clearer eye for telling developmentally normative use from unhealthy use and behaviors.
Who it's for
CIIS students and clinicians-in-training, especially anyone who'll work with children, teens, or families.
About the speaker
Marcus Brittain Fleming, LCSW, is a psychotherapist in private practice in Los Angeles, seeing clients in person and online. He works with couples, new parents, and men navigating relationships and life transitions. He is also US Clinical Lead at TiNT (The Technology Informed Therapist).
About TiNT
TiNT –The Technology Informed Therapist brings tech-education, AI-literacy and opportunities to therapists, and clinical credibility to mental health products.
We're a two-sided talent institution at the intersection of clinical practice and technology. On one side, TiNT Academy teaches clinicians to develop their own stance and boundaries with tech for their business and practice, alongside building their own tools. On the other, TiNT Studio places clinicians inside startups and runs research sprints, so the products shaping mental health have real clinical judgment behind them.
Our team spans India and the US, and this lecture is part of how we bring practitioners and trainees into that conversation early, before the future of the field arrives.
