About Event

Join us for Public Study, Okrika's collaborative reading series. This month we're working through Buchi Emecheta's "Second Class Citizen", focusing on chapters 1-7.

Through the character of Adah, Emecheta offers a deeply personal account of migration, ambition, and womanhood. Moving from Nigeria to the UK, Adah quickly comes to understand the realities of being Black and a woman in a world that often decides your place before you’ve had the chance to define it for yourself. Together, we’ll explore what it means to navigate that tension and what it costs to become yourself.

Once you RSVP, we’ll send excerpts ahead of time so you can read and annotate before we meet. But if you don’t get to it, that’s okay. Come anyway. We’ll spend time reading together, with space to pause, reflect, and process as a group. Printed copies will be available, and the discussion is designed to meet you wherever you are within the excerpt.

Refreshments, printed excerpts, and note-taking materials provided.

For transparency sake, all costs go to the production and materials used for the events as well as to help ensure these events are as accessible as possible to the public. Thank you!
