In 2025, reports emerged that global law firm Weil, Gotshal & Manges paid between $18 million and $20 million to prevent the publication of stolen client data following a cyberattack.

At the same time, deepfake-enabled fraud is accelerating at an alarming rate. More than 105,000 deepfake incidents were reported in 2024, equivalent to one every five minutes, with criminals increasingly using cloned voices and synthetic identities to impersonate executives, manipulate employees, and facilitate financial fraud. Between the end of 2024 and the first quarter of 2025 alone, audio-based deepfake attacks reportedly increased by 1,600%.
