"From 'This City' to 'That City': A Book Talk and Signing with Justin Wong"

When comics become a silent farewell, how do we remember a city?

The That City (那城) comic series, created by Hong Kong cartoonist Justin Wong, was originally serialized in the Ming Pao Sunday Magazine. The column’s original title, This City (這城), was changed to That City following the implementation of the National Security Law on July 1, 2020—a reflection of the reality that visual imagery began to carry more risk than text. In 2021, facing mounting political pressure, Justin Wong made the difficult decision to leave Hong Kong and relocate to London. This series, quite unexpectedly, became his final act of parting from his home soil.

We are deeply honored to host Justin Wong at Unbound Bookstore. Join us for an intimate conversation as he shares his creative journey—from his roots in traditional art to his work in digital media, and from political satire to the introspection that follows displacement. Through his minimalist yet profoundly resonant brushstrokes, we will explore the power and boundaries of comics in turbulent times.

This is more than just a book talk; it is a raw, honest confession about freedom, fear, and the forced departure from home.

We cordially invite you to join us as we read this "farewell work" together.

About the Author: Justin Wong is a Hong Kong cartoonist and media artist. A graduate of the Fine Arts Department at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, he has taught at the City University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Baptist University. For years, he has used political comics (such as Geek Geek Ger Ger and That City [formerly This City]) to address social issues, earning a reputation for his iconic style and philosophical depth. Since relocating to the UK in 2021, he has continued to explore the resonance between art and the era through his work.

His publications include LONELY PLANET 1-2, HELLO WORLD, Made in Hong Kong, 80 Taipei x 90 Hong Kong: Comic Dual Cities, and That City.
