About the documentary
This 65-minute documentary follows the visual artist - Sleepr - and their vulnerable journey into the Peruvian Amazon, undertaking twelve traditional ayahuasca ceremonies guided by Shipibo shamans. The artist aims - and struggles - to observe and document the visual aesthetics of the ayahuasca experience. These struggles touch on the limits of comprehension of the ineffable and the complex translation of experience and meaning into tangible artifacts.
As the ceremonies progress, the artist confronts increasingly complex visions and encounters with seemingly autonomous intelligences or “plant spirits,” challenging his assumptions about reality, consciousness, and agency. What begins as an observational effort deepens into a transformative process, dissolving conceptual frameworks and exposing the limitations of language and culture in describing direct experience.
The resulting series of artworks, form a visual trail of clues of inner space and offers a window into one individuals attempts at understanding them.
