What Counts as an Original Contribution in Research Enabled by AI?

22 October 2026 · 16:00 · Sala Ferdinand, Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iași
Discussion language: Romanian

When Generative AI helps with writing, coding, analysis, literature search or idea development, what counts as the researcher’s own contribution?

This academic panel brings together speakers whose experience spans literary scholarship, empirical finance, software development and AI research in industry:

  • Prof. Codrin Liviu Cuțitaru — Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iași

  • Prof. Marius Alin Andrieș — Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iași

  • Eugen Bușoiu — Founder of IAȘI AI and Software Development Manager at Amazon

  • Mihaela Onofrei — Researcher and CEO of Apollo AI Technologies

Moderator: Prof. Valerică Greavu-Șerban, Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iași.

The conversation will explore how contributions are recognised when GenAI participates in developing an idea or producing a result. Speakers will draw on their own experience to discuss authorship, the judgement involved in making research decisions, and the evidence needed to support a claimed contribution.

We will also consider how these judgements compare across academia and industry, how researchers should document AI use, and who remains responsible for the work. The discussion will include questions and contributions from the audience.

The panel is part of ARC AWARE 2026 – AI Workflows for Applied Research and Evaluation Workshop, organised in association with GEBA 2026.

Who should come?
Students, doctoral researchers, academics and professionals interested in how GenAI is changing research practice and our understanding of originality.
