【Academic Talk 学术讲座】 A Gaze in a World in Motion在流动的世界中凝视
In conjunction with the exhibition A Gaze in a World in Motion: Shui Tit Sing’s Journeys, Lens and Modernity, Prestige Gallery will present a dedicated academic talk aimed at deepening public engagement with the artist’s practice and its broader art historical significance. The lecture focuses on Shui Tit Sing’s (1914–1997) cross-media approach spanning photography, painting, and sculpture, examining the methodological role of photography in the formation of his artistic language and his position within the context of Southeast Asian modernism.
The talk will feature distinguished speakers including founding SAM director and art historian Kwok Kian Chow, Singapore-based artist and archivist Koh Nguang How, and the exhibition’s curator Shi Ruihao. The session will be moderated by gallery owner Audrey Zhang.
Bringing together perspectives from art history, archival practice, and curatorial research, the speakers will explore key themes such as the role of photography as a methodological tool in Shui’s practice, the development of his cross-media visual language, and the historical construction of “Nanyang modernity.”
Rather than approaching photography solely as documentation, the talk positions it as a critical “mechanism of seeing and thinking”—a generative process that connects lived experience, historical transformation, and artistic formation. Through this multi-layered dialogue, the session aims to offer a more nuanced and comprehensive framework for understanding Shui Tit Sing’s work, while also contributing to broader discussions on the historiography of Southeast Asian modern art.

配合展览《在流动的世界中凝视：许铁生的旅行、镜头与现代性》的推出，品艺画廊将举办专题学术讲座，进一步深化公众对于艺术家创作体系的理解与讨论。本次讲座聚焦许铁生（1914–1997）在摄影、绘画与雕塑之间所形成的跨媒介实践，尝试从方法论层面重新审视其艺术语言的生成机制，以及其在东南亚现代艺术语境中的历史位置。
讲座特别邀请前新加坡美术馆馆长、艺术史学者郭建超，东南亚艺术文献研究员许元豪，以及本次展览策展人石芮豪共同参与讨论。由画廊主张鹤馨主持。三位嘉宾将从艺术史研究、档案与文献、以及当代策展实践等不同维度切入，围绕许铁生摄影在其整体创作中的方法论角色、跨媒介语言的转化路径，以及“南洋现代性”的历史建构等核心议题展开深入对话。
本次讲座不仅旨在呈现许铁生摄影作为“记录”的一面，更将其视为一种“观看与思考的机制”——一种连接个人经验、时代变迁与艺术语言生成的关键路径。通过多重视角的交叉讨论，讲座将为公众提供理解艺术家创作体系的更为立体与深入的框架，同时也为重新思考东南亚现代艺术的历史叙述提供新的切入点。
