Inside the Loop: What Happens to Retired Technology
Today's circular solutions start with yesterday's technology.
Retired IT hardware carries one of the heaviest environmental footprints of our modern world, and one of the least understood. Most of a laptop's lifetime carbon is spent before it is ever switched on — in mining, refining, and manufacture. A server rack concentrates copper, gold, palladium, and rare earth elements that took enormous extraction to produce. The same equipment also holds lead, mercury, and flame retardants that cause real harm when it ends up in the wrong place. Globally, most retired electronics are not handled correctly.
That outcome is not inevitable. It is a handling problem and handling problems have solutions.
Join Avritek and Mango for a behind-the-scenes tour of a certified processing facility in San Diego. You will follow retired equipment through the full path: secure intake, data destruction, testing and refurbishment for reuse, and documented recovery of the materials inside. Every step is traceable. The certifications that govern it — R2v3 for environmental and downstream accountability, NAID AAA for data destruction — exist precisely because the alternative is equipment disappearing into export streams and informal dismantling, where the harm lands on communities that never used the hardware.
This is what a working circular system looks like in practice. Reuse first, because keeping a machine in service beats rebuilding one. Material recovery when reuse is exhausted, with a documented chain throughout the process. And organizations earn credit from the fair market value of what they retire, which is what makes the responsible path also the practical one.
