About Event

Session 5 of the Online Guitar Choro Club is coming up on Saturday, October 17, live on Zoom.

This month we step into two other great Brazilian rhythms, Baião and Ijexá, with one tune: "Um Tom Para Jobim" by Sivuca and Oswaldinho do Acordeon.

SPECIAL GUEST: ANAT COHEN Brooklyn-based clarinetist and saxophonist Anat Cohen joins us for a live Q&A after the tune. Known around the world for her expressive virtuosity and magnetic stage presence, she is a soloist, bandleader, composer and collaborator, and an educator and ambassador for the music, with acclaimed albums, sold-out world tours, and profiles on NPR's Fresh Air and in The New York Times. Jazz journalist Nat Hentoff wrote that "she tells stories from her own experiences" that connect listeners to their own dreams and longings.

Anat has also recorded Brazilian music with 7-string guitarist Marcello Gonçalves, our Session 4 guest, including the duo albums Reconvexo and Outra Coisa: The Music of Moacir Santos.

THE TWO RHYTHMS

  • Baião: rooted in the rural Northeast of Brazil and given its definitive shape in the 1940s by Luiz Gonzaga and Humberto Teixeira.

  • Ijexá: a sacred rhythm of Candomblé that became the groove of the Afoxé street processions, and was popularized in the 1970s through songs by Gilberto Gil, Dorival Caymmi and Caetano Veloso.

We will work through both grooves on the guitar and see how the tune moves between them.
