Over 75% of the software running Europe is owned by American companies. We made peace with that years ago, around the same time we made peace with carrying a microphone in our pocket.
We stopped calling it surveillance and started calling it convenience.
Your preferences, your 3am ChatGPT searches, your taste. All of it sitting inside someone else's model, shaped by an engineer who decided what mattered. You didn't agree to any of that. There is no neutral data. Every schema is a small power move nobody voted on.
Then AI arrived, and the conversation moved on before we'd finished the last one. The companies that owned the data now own the models trained on it. Power, compounding.
Heidegger had a word for this: standing-reserve.
The moment a forest stops being a forest and becomes timber-on-call. It's worth asking whether we've become the forest.
