American-made Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) face a severe cost disadvantage relative to foreign competitors due to a historical reliance on international components, a fragmented domestic supply chain, and a lack of vertical integration. This economic gap restricts the development of secure, Blue sUAS-compliant components necessary for advanced drone architectures.
Specifically, there is a critical capability gap in domestic components that enable fixed-wing, hybrid-electric distributed electric propulsion (DEP) systems. Without these cost-effective components, NASA cannot efficiently conduct sub-scale research into future transport aircraft configurations, and the commercial sector remains deprived of high-endurance, long-range drone platforms required for heavy-duty logistics, agriculture, and emergency response.
