But you can be technically right and still fail to change the decision.
You can raise the same concern repeatedly and still not get traction.
You can do strong work and still find that your judgment carries less weight outside your immediate team.
Often, the missing piece is influence beyond your immediate team.
At Senior, Staff, and Principal levels, influence increasingly shapes whether your ideas are heard, trusted, and acted on.
This Lab is designed to help you understand where your influence may be breaking down and what to do about it.
Bring one real influence challenge
Come with a situation from your own work, such as:
an idea that keeps stalling
a technical concern that isn’t gaining traction
a stakeholder relationship that feels difficult
a decision you want to shape across teams
feedback that you need to “be more strategic,” “increase your visibility,” or “build more influence”
You’ll leave with:
A clearer understanding of where your influence may be breaking down.
A practical way to think about influence beyond vague advice like “communicate better” or “build more executive presence.”
One concrete influence move you can try in the work you are already doing.

What we’ll explore
I’ll teach a practical framework adapted from my talk Being Right Isn’t Enough: Influence that Scales.
We’ll look at how influence is shaped by:
Clarity of Purpose: Are you clear on the outcome you’re trying to create and why it is worth solving?
Thriving Relationships: Do the people whose support you need trust your judgment?
Skillful Advocacy: Are you making your reasoning visible to the right people, at the right time, in a way they can act on?
You’ll also look at the three contexts that shape how your ideas are interpreted: Technical, Organizational, and Business.
You’ll then apply the framework to your own situation and identify where the breakdown may be happening.
We’ll finish with group discussion and coaching to help you refine your thinking and identify one concrete influence move to try.

This is a live, interactive 60-minute Lab.
We’ll spend the session across:
a short 15–20 minute lesson
a guided individual exercise
group discussion and coaching
a short closing reflection

This Lab is designed primarily for Senior, Staff, and Principal Software Engineers who want to grow their influence, technical leadership, organizational impact, or readiness for broader scope.
This lab is for you if you’ve ever thought, “I know I’m right, so why isn’t this moving?”
Mid-level Engineers navigating similar questions are also welcome.
