​Strong technical work doesn't always translate into broader impact. At Senior+ levels, influence determines whether your thinking actually affects decisions.

​In this interactive Uncharted Lab, we'll start with a short 15–20 minute lesson adapted from my talk Being Right Isn't Enough: Influence that Scales.

​You'll learn a practical framework for understanding three ingredients of influence:

​Clarity of Purpose — Know what outcome you're trying to create and why it’s important.
Thriving Relationships — Build the trust and credibility that help your ideas move forward.
Skillful Advocacy — Make your thinking visible, understandable, and actionable.

​You’ll also learn the three contexts that shape how people interpret your ideas: Technical, Organizational, and Business.

​

​Then you’ll apply these ideas to a real influence challenge from your own work, such as an idea that keeps stalling, a technical concern that isn't gaining traction, a difficult stakeholder relationship, or a decision you want to shape.

​We'll finish with group discussion and coaching so you can refine your thinking and leave with one concrete influence move to try.

​You’ll leave with

• ​A clearer understanding of where your influence may be breaking down.

• ​A practical way to think about influence beyond vague advice like “communicate better” or “build more executive presence.”

• ​And one concrete influence move you can try in the work you are already doing.

​You’ll also receive my Why Your Career Feels Stuck (Even When You’re Doing Strong Work) guide so you can continue the reflection after the session.

​Who this is for

​This Lab is designed primarily for Senior, Staff, and Principal Software Engineers who want to grow their influence, technical leadership, organizational impact, or readiness for broader scope.

​It may be especially useful if:

• ​your ideas are strong but do not consistently gain traction

• ​your work is valued locally but not widely understood

• ​you keep repeating the same technical argument without changing the outcome

• ​you are being told to “be more strategic,” “increase your visibility,” or “build more influence”

• ​you want to shape decisions across engineering, product, management, and leadership

​Mid-level Engineers navigating similar questions are also welcome.
