What You'll Learn
Musical Theatre is a unique genre of music that includes all vocal styles and spans a tremendous 100+ years of American history. If you aren't sure what the difference between Carousel and Cats is, OR if you have some experience with Musical Theatre but aren't sure how to choose repertoire, OR you want to teach your students great technique within this genre, then this is the class for you.
Course Description This course will cover the following:
The history of Musical Theatre. How did it transform from light opera and vaudeville shows to the Pop/Rock, Movie-Musical conglomerate it is today? Understanding the historical context for theatre music is crucial to sing each era and theatre music style appropriately.
Belting and Legit and Rapping—oh, my! There are a lot of vocal styles that exist in the world of Musical Theatre. Understand what they are and how to teach your students to do it right.
How to choose and assign repertoire for learning, lessons, and auditioning.
About Chelsea
Chelsea Wilson is a voice teacher and coach specializing in musical theatre performance. She’s a graduate of the University of Michigan’s Musical Theatre BFA program and uses her expertise to support her students all over the world, from Broadway stars to amateur singers.
She’s currently the associate vocal coach for MASQUERADE, the new immersive Phantom production in New York City. In 2017 she began working as the associate vocal coach on the Broadway production of SCHOOL OF ROCK and later THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA.
In 2021 she co-founded Broadway Vocal Coach, an online training platform and podcast for professional and aspiring musical theatre performers who want to take the next step in their careers.
Chelsea began her voice teacher education journey in 2007 and now has the pleasure of training other voice teachers as part of the education team for the Institute for Vocal Advancement.
She lives in Raleigh, North Carolina with her husband and two daughters. Most days you can find her sipping a Diet Coke and being told "not to sing along!" to the Disney tunes on constant repeat at her house.
