Día de los Muertos / Day of the Dead: A Two-Day Celebration of Memory, Love & Release

English

Día de los Muertos is a sacred and joyful tradition rooted in Indigenous Mexican and Mesoamerican practices, later woven with Catholic influences. Celebrated around November 1–2, it is a time when families and communities welcome back the spirits of loved ones who have passed. It is not somber or frightening—it is a celebration of connection, memory, and love that continues beyond death. Families build ofrendas: altars filled with photographs, candles, cempasúchil (marigolds), sugar skulls, pan de muerto, favorite foods and drinks, and meaningful objects. The bright color and scent of cempasúchil are believed to guide spirits home. Every offering carries intention, remembrance, and love. Día de los Muertos is not Halloween; it is a heartfelt tradition of remembrance, hospitality, and continuance.

Join us for a two-day community gathering where the living and the departed meet in beauty.

Day 1: The Ofrenda — Remembering Together We begin in the listening room with music, cacao, letter writing, paper rolls, and construction paper. Together we will craft and build a community ofrenda. Please bring photos or food offerings to place on the altar, but be mindful that the ofrenda will remain up until November 6th. As we make cempasúchil (marigolds) by hand, pour your energy, prayers, and memories into each petal—they, too, become an offering. Return the next day for the celebration.

Day 2: Celebration & Reflection — Cacao, Memory, Dance & Release We begin with a moment for cacao at the beginning—a grounding, heart-opening pause to honor those we remember. From there, we share memories of our loved ones and community. Then the music rises, brighter and more upbeat: a celebration to honor those who have passed, with good vibes and a dance-party spirit. We close with letter writing and a moment to yourself—space to say goodbye, reflect, and release with love and gratitude.
