About Event

Are you a fan of Gundam, Magic: The Gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh, Pokemon, and/or other trading card games? Do you ever wonder what makes them so popular?

Well this series of workshops is for you!

Join PHD game designer, Sam Shields across four hands-on-sessions, where you'll learn how TCGs work as games, why cards become desirable, how to prototype your own card systems and how card games move between physical, digital open-source, and hybrid formats.

Agenda:

Day 1 (9/12): The Core of Trading Card Gameplay: Resources and Interactions
- Introduction on how available cards, revealed information, attack, defense, etc. can all be conceptualized as resources
- How do interactions (mechanics) translate between card resources?
- What goes into making a card?

Day 2 (9/19): The Core of Trading Card Collectability: Worldbuilding and Scarcity
- What is collectability driven by?
- What is hidden collectability?

Day 3 (9/26): Prototyping Trading Card Games: Sharpies, Dice, Bits of Paper
- 1-1 support in prototyping

Day 4 (10/3): Cards in the World: Printing, Digital, and Beyond
- What are the different mediums and distribution channels of cards in the world?
- What are the affordances of certain methods?
