As AI becomes increasingly embedded in our institutions, workplaces and daily lives, the question becomes impossible to avoid:
What legal frameworks and moral principles should shape its development and use so that it serves the common good and preserves human dignity?
In this webinar, two philosophers bring philosophy, law, ethics and public life into conversation through brief opening reflections followed by moderated discussion.
Human Dignity, Rights and Responsibilities
Margherita Daverio is Assistant Professor in Philosophy of Law at LUMSA University and teaches artificial intelligence, ethics and law at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum) in Rome. She also teaches in the Master in Global Bioethics, a joint programme of the UNESCO Chair in Bioethics and Human Rights and Anáhuac University in Mexico. A member of the Italian Society for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine and the Scientific Committee of the International Centre for Family Studies, she has published two books and several articles on the foundations of law, informed consent, and the ethical and legal dimensions of artificial intelligence.
Ethics and Public Life
Sebastiano Maffettone is Professor of Political Philosophy at Luiss University in Rome and directs Ethos, its Observatory of Public Ethics, whose work engages with the ethical and political implications of artificial intelligence. He was the first president of the Italian Society of Political Philosophy and founded the journal Filosofia e questioni pubbliche, now Philosophy & Public Issues. He is the author of some 30 books and numerous scholarly articles.
In this webinar, philosophers Margherita Daverio and Sebastiano Maffettone bring legal philosophy, ethics and public life into conversation through brief opening reflections followed by a discussion moderated by Ricardo da Silva, S.J., a Jesuit priest serving in the Communications Office of the General Curia of the Society of Jesus and editor of the Society’s international magazine.
