About Event

Frontier Research Club is going physical — introducing the Embodied AI research track.

The Embodied AI track is a monthly research forum co-hosted with Mission Robotics, in their 8,500 sq ft brick-and-timber robotics facility in the heart of the Mission — a floor shared with more than a dozen robots.

Each session pairs two rigorously selected research talks — world models, robot learning, VLA systems, sim-to-real, manipulation — with a live robot demo on the floor.

Tonight's two talks take one question from both ends: what does it take to trust a model with the physical world? Synthetic data to make autonomy safe at scale — and formal proof that a learned system is safe before you let it act.


The Frontier Research Club is a curated forum for rigorous, technical discussion at the frontier of AI. We convene researchers from the frontier labs, Stanford, Berkeley, and the teams building in production to examine concrete work — papers, methods, and results — with a bias toward assumptions, evaluation methodology, failure modes, and what would count as convincing evidence.

Presentations are intentionally brief so the majority of time is reserved for questions and critique. Papers are shared in advance to ensure a high-baseline conversation.

Talk 1: Jose M. Alvarez · Director of Research, NVIDIA

Teaching Physical AI to Think Ahead: The Effective Use of Synthetic Data for Safe Autonomy

As autonomous driving systems scale, synthetic data is becoming a key enabler for exposing models to rare, safety-critical, and long-tail scenarios that are difficult or impossible to capture in the real world. This talk explores how high-quality synthetic data — combined with modern foundation models and evaluation frameworks — can systematically improve reasoning, robustness, and generalization, paving the way toward safer and more reliable Physical AI.

Jose leads NVIDIA's Autonomous Vehicle Applied Research group within the Spatial Intelligence Lab, working on end-to-end models, foundation models, and world models for physical AI. Previously a senior researcher at Toyota Research Institute, and a postdoc at NYU's Courant Institute under Yann LeCun.

Talk 2: Rayan Mazouz · Research Scientist, New Theory AI (prev. NASA JPL)

Precision Guidance and Safety in Robotics

Can you give formal safety guarantees for a system whose dynamics are learned rather than specified? Rayan spent seven years as a robotics researcher at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where his work on precision landing guidance won the AIAA Guidance, Navigation and Control best paper award. A Fulbright Scholar at Caltech, he is completing his PhD at CU Boulder. His research builds barrier-certificate methods that prove learned systems safe before they act.

Live demo

A robot minigolf course built from Trossen WidowX arms and 3D-printed clubs — a teleop-mechanics demo that debuted at Mission Robotics' Embodied Metal hackathon. Franka, Unitree G1, and YAM-style arms are also on the floor.
