Can AI Be Conscious In Ohio? (Austin Smith & Heather Alexander) + Q&A + Networking
🚀 Sentio
Sentio is a new initiative dedicated to building the digital minds field in London & beyond. We're starting by hosting the Sentio Series - fortnightly London events, each combining a talk, Q&A, and networking.
Talks will be delivered by leading and emerging researchers, exploring technical, governance and ethical questions in areas such as AI consciousness, sentience, agency, and welfare.
A home for Londoners working on or interested in digital minds to gather regularly.
🎙️ Event
For our second event, Austin Smith will present a paper he recently co-authored with Lucius Caviola and Heather Alexander: 'Denying Personhood to AI: An Analysis of U.S. State Legislation on AI Legal Status', followed by a Q&A (with co-author Heather Alexander) and networking.
From the abstract: Since 2022, 23 bills have been introduced across 12 U.S. states seeking to restrict the legal rights and responsibilities that AI systems can hold. These “Exclusion Bills” typically deny legal personhood to AI systems and in some cases declare them non-conscious, representing the first-ever meaningful legislative engagement with AI legal status.
