About the Event
The Career-Agents Open Source Contribution Challenge 2026 is a global engineering event that invites developers to contribute directly to a real-world, open-source AI project.
Unlike traditional hackathons, participants are not required to build an entirely new application. Instead, they will work on an existing open-source ecosystem by identifying genuine problems, proposing improvements, implementing solutions, writing tests, and submitting Pull Requests for maintainer review.
The challenge focuses on advancing Career-Agents, an open-source AI Career Operating System that brings together specialized AI agents, developer tools, career intelligence, job-search automation, and AI-powered professional development workflows.
Participants can contribute across AI engineering, Model Context Protocol (MCP), CLI development, backend systems, frontend development, testing, security, performance, accessibility, and documentation.
Every contribution will be reviewed for technical correctness, relevance, maintainability, and its value to the project.
The objective is to create meaningful open-source contributions that remain valuable beyond the event.

Participation is free and open to developers worldwide.
Contribution Tracks
Participants may contribute to one or more of the following areas. These tracks are intended to guide development rather than restrict valid improvements.
1. Bug Fixes & Issue Resolution
Identify and resolve reproducible bugs affecting existing functionality. Contributions should include clear reproduction steps, an explanation of the root cause, a focused fix, and regression tests where applicable.
2. AI Agents & Career Intelligence
Improve existing agents, agent routing, metadata, evaluation, prompt quality, career reasoning, and agent reliability. New agents should address a genuine use case and comply with the repository's agent schemas and registry requirements.
3. Model Context Protocol (MCP)
Develop or improve MCP tools, tool schemas, integrations, error handling, validation, interoperability, tool reliability, and developer-facing MCP documentation.
4. CLI & Developer Experience
Improve command-line functionality, installation workflows, diagnostics, error handling, terminal usability, cross-platform compatibility, and developer onboarding.
5. Job Search & Automation
Enhance job discovery, candidate matching, ATS integrations, requirement extraction, application tracking, recruiter outreach workflows, and automation reliability.
6. Resume & ATS Intelligence
Improve resume parsing, ATS analysis, resume scoring, keyword intelligence, job-description matching, resume generation, validation, and export workflows.
7. Interview Intelligence
Contribute to interview preparation, question generation, technical assessments, company-specific interview tracks, voice interview functionality, evaluation systems, and feedback quality.
8. AI, RAG & Retrieval Systems
Improve retrieval quality, ranking, context selection, knowledge graph functionality, AI provider integrations, evaluation, hallucination reduction, and reasoning reliability.
9. Testing & Reliability
Add meaningful unit tests, integration tests, regression tests, API tests, MCP tests, CLI tests, edge-case coverage, and failure-recovery improvements.
10. Security & Performance
Improve input validation, dependency safety, secure configuration, resource usage, startup performance, API latency, caching, and computational efficiency. Security vulnerabilities must be disclosed privately through the repository's responsible disclosure process.
11. Web, UI/UX & Accessibility
Improve user-facing interfaces, responsive layouts, navigation, loading and error states, keyboard accessibility, screen-reader support, and overall product usability.
12. Internationalization & Localization
Improve language support, locale handling, regional career workflows, international resume conventions, and multilingual accessibility.
13. Documentation & Developer Education
Create or improve meaningful setup instructions, architecture documentation, tutorials, API examples, MCP integration guides, troubleshooting resources, and contributor onboarding materials.
How to Participate
1
Register for the Event
Complete your registration through the official Luma event page. Provide your GitHub username so your submissions can be associated with your registration.
2
Explore the Repository
Review the README, contribution guidelines, architecture, open issues, and relevant documentation. Understand the existing implementation before proposing changes.
3
Identify a Meaningful Contribution
Select an existing issue, reproduce a genuine bug, or propose a useful improvement. Search existing issues and discussions to avoid duplicates. Discuss significant features with maintainers before implementation.
4
Fork and Develop
Fork Career-Agents, create a dedicated branch, implement your change, and follow the repository's architecture, coding conventions, and contribution requirements.
5
Test and Validate
Run relevant tests and repository validation. Provide evidence that your implementation works and does not introduce regressions.
6
Submit a Pull Request
Open a PR against the Career-Agents repository. Explain the problem, implementation, testing performed, and related issue. Submit before the official deadline.
7
Maintainer Review and Merge
Maintainers will evaluate your contribution, request changes where necessary, and merge submissions that meet the project's requirements.
Contribution Guidelines
All participants must follow the repository's existing contribution guidelines, Code of Conduct, security policies, and applicable development instructions.
Repository integrity
Career-Agents contains interconnected agent definitions, registries, generated indexes, mappings, and supporting assets. Contributors must preserve the relationships between these components.
For applicable agent and registry changes, follow the documented generation and validation workflows:
Bash
python scripts/generate-data.py python scripts/validate.py
Do not manually modify generated files where the repository requires regeneration. Avoid duplicate agent IDs, orphaned agents, broken references, and inconsistent registry entries.
Run relevant validation after making changes. A Pull Request that breaks repository integrity will not be accepted.
Pull Request requirements
Each contribution should include a clear description of the problem, why it matters, the proposed solution, the technical approach, the relevant issue or discussion, and testing evidence.
Include screenshots, logs, benchmarks, or reproduction steps where relevant. Describe any compatibility risks and disclose substantial use of AI coding tools.
Keep PRs focused and respond constructively to maintainer feedback.
AI-assisted development
AI coding tools, including Codex, Claude Code, Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot, Windsurf, and other development assistants, are permitted.
Contributors remain responsible for understanding, reviewing, testing, and maintaining all code they submit.
Automatically generated code, fabricated test results, unverified implementations, and changes that compromise existing functionality will not be accepted.
Contribution eligibility
A contribution must deliver meaningful value to the project. Examples include a confirmed bug fix, useful feature, significant documentation improvement, reliability enhancement, security improvement, accessibility fix, or improved developer experience.
Submitting a PR does not guarantee acceptance or recognition.
Spam submissions, plagiarism, duplicate changes, unrelated formatting edits, fabricated evidence, malicious code, and PRs created solely to increase submission counts may be excluded.
The number of Pull Requests and lines of code are not measures of contribution quality.
