About Event

Trauma-Informed Design, which recognizes that social media has the potential to (re)trigger trauma, may seem at first like an approach that serves a subset of users. But - as it is articulated by Sarita Schoenebeck and her co-authors - it's also a cohesive framework to reduce online harm and support user wellbeing in a way that also honors users' agency and voice. Join us for this important conversation with Sarita to walk us through the six principles of Trauma-Informed Design and explore their practical applications.

About Sarita: Sarita is Professor in the School of Information at the University of Michigan where she directs the Living Online Lab (LOL). Her research focuses on equity and justice in online environments. Some of her current projects include: promoting justice for targets of online harassment, measuring dark patterns in design and algorithms, and supporting identity and privacy on social media. She is also a Fellow at the Center for Democracy and Technology, the Yale Information Society Project, and the Yale Justice Collaboratory.

About Pro-Socials: Pro-Socials are informal meet-ups where technologists and researchers can learn from - and inspire - each other around understanding and integrating prosocial design. Each Pro-Social includes a motivating question, conversation with experts and break-out convos where you can meet like-minded technologists (designers, product managers, entrepreneurs and trust & safety professionals) and researchers to share insights and begin to co-create new knowledge together.
