This month’s topic: The role of data in AI
A recent discussion with the technology team of a large organisation brought up an absurd question: why do you need to consider data strategy and architecture for AI?
If you do not have one data strategy and architecture and no one within the organisation has this mandate to get high quality data in order, business users and clients will have a hard time using AI with company specific data. Without context and proprietary data, it is difficult for AI to deliver value to the business.
Sometimes teams within companies are so far apart that they become blind to the big picture. Simple focus on daily chores while the high level strategic view of the company’s data assets and technology landscape are not considered.
This is of course very difficult to get right. This is not about blaming one company. All companies face the same issue and fail at some level. Nothing is perfect.
What should a company consider regarding data management, data governance (and AI governance) when developing and using AI?
As the use of LLMs grows, managing data, outputs, lineage and accountability becomes a massive headache, especially when the models operate largely as black boxes.
