From POC to production: my experience standing up a data platform
The company I work for grew through acquisitions, so its data sits in lots of separate systems. Instead of copying everything into one warehouse, my team uses one SQL engine, Dremio, to query about 40 sources directly. The proof of concept (POC) ran on one VM in March 2024, and reaching production took about 18 months. I'll talk about running the platform on Kubernetes and the other teams it depends on. I'll also cover an outage when a cloud key rotated, how we fixed it, and what's still not solved.

Parking: Park in the Inklings Coffee & Tea lot (driveway off Main St, just north of the building). Full? Try the public lot off W Neal St (enter from W Neal St or W Angela St, 4 min walk) or the public lot off Peters Ave (4 min walk).

Can I come if I don't live in the Tri-Valley?
Yes. Small Batch Meetup is meant for people who live or work in the Tri-Valley, and anyone and everyone is invited. With 10 seats, when a batch is full, we may remove an RSVP from someone who doesn't live or work in the Tri-Valley to make room for someone who does.
What if a batch is full?
Join the waitlist. When someone cancels, we give their seat to someone on the waitlist, and Luma emails you if it's yours.
Do I have to give a talk or introduce myself?
Only if you want to. Lightning talks happen on the spot, and the first half hour is just time to grab a drink and meet people. Coming on your own? We'll introduce you around. Every experience level is welcome, from students and career changers to seasoned engineers.
Can I get the slides afterward?
Yes. After each batch, the deep dive's recording goes on the home page when the speaker agrees, and the slides and photos go up in the Discord: smallbatchmeetup.com/discord
Can I bring a friend?
Yes, please share the event with them. Have them save their own seat on Luma, since there are only 10. If it's full, they can join the waitlist.
