About Event

On September 16, Alex Johnson and Kiah Lau Haslett of Finity and Fintech Takes will sit down with Eric Richmond, Country Director and CEO of Coinbase Canada, and David Merriby, CEO of the future KOHO Bank.

The four of them will compare how Canada and the United States are approaching the changes reshaping banking and payments, and discuss where both systems may be heading next.

Canada and the United States are modernizing many of the same parts of the financial system, but taking different paths.

In the United States, stablecoins, bank and trust charters, access to payment infrastructure and the future of open banking are all being actively contested.

Here in Canada, stablecoins and consumer-driven banking are moving forward, payment service providers are now supervised by the Bank of Canada, the Real-Time Rail is preparing to launch, and OSFI is working to make the bank-application process clearer and more predictable for eligible new entrants.

Different approaches, but many of the same questions:

  • Who should be allowed to move money?

  • Who can hold it?

  • What protections should apply?

  • How much access should new entrants have to the core banking system?

No panel. No policy briefing. No attempt to manufacture a conclusion before the conversation happens.

Just four people who understand different parts of the industry, sitting around an actual fireplace and having an honest conversation.

The evening

6:00 p.m. — Drinks and networking
6:30 p.m. — Fireside conversation with Alex, Kiah, Eric and David
7:00 p.m. — Short break and dinner setup
7:30 p.m. — Dinner and networking

The evening will take place in a private setting at the Shangri-La Toronto overlooking Lake Ontario.

And when we say dinner, we mean dinner. Not passed appetizers and a questionable shrimp tower. Actual dinner.

Overnight Settlement is intentionally small. Registration requests will be reviewed individually to preserve the intimate nature of the evening.

Bankers’ Hours, held earlier that day, has more capacity and is open to the broader community: https://luma.com/7wxgjro4

Title Partner:

Sardine

Sardine is an agentic risk platform that unifies fraud prevention, compliance, and AML operations for banks, fintechs, and merchants. Founded by a team that scaled Coinbase, launched Revolut US, and fought fraud at PayPal, Zelle, and Uber, the company combines device intelligence, behavioural biometrics, and consortium fraud data with AI agents that take on the investigative work (sanctions screening, due diligence, case triage, SAR drafting) that has traditionally consumed fraud and compliance teams. Sardine covers the full lifecycle from KYC/KYB onboarding through payment and transaction monitoring across ACH, wire, card, and real-time rails, and counts FIS, Nubank, Intuit, Experian, and Deel among its customers. Their thesis is simple: money should move fast without moving risk with it.
