About Event

End your Halloweekend on an existential note with AIRPLANE MODE ✈️: a series of offline gatherings designed to bring young people back to third spaces and encourage creativity, connection, and community.

Join us from 1-4pm on November 2nd at the All Hallows Amphitheater, located at the Washington National Cathedral grounds.

We'll gather among the trees for creative activities alongside reflective conversations on this month's theme: Meaning, Purpose & Religion. Where does Gen-Z derive meaning today? How can they build lives driven by agency and deeper purpose? And how can we revive the sense of community that religion has historically provided for society—whether or not we’re engaging in traditional institutions? NOTE: Individuals of all faiths & beliefs are welcome.

1:00-2:00pm | Silent creative activities:
*ALL SUPPLIES PROVIDED*

  1. Poetry Corner — Memorize a poem or write your own!

  2. Annotation Station — Read short essays across different traditions, and annotate/capture the lines that stick with you most.

  3. Letters & Watercolor — Paint a watercolor while writing a letter to your future self or someone that's shaped your understanding of life.

  4. Print Table — Slow down with a cup of coffee and the crossword, Sunday papers or a magazine.

2:00-3:00pm | Small-group discussions:

Upon check-in, you'll receive a prompt inspired by a different spiritual or religious tradition to reflect on and discuss with others. What is a full life? What do we owe strangers? How much freedom should we give up for our relationships? Is love worth organizing your life around? Muse and discuss over coffee and pastries!

3:00-4:00pm | Large-group discussions:

Join a group-wide conversation, moderated by the Aspen Institute's Philosophy & Society Initiative, to debate and discuss your reflections.

In case of rain, we’ll move to an indoor location on-site or reschedule if needed. Follow @airplanemode.ig to stay updated on future events.

Hosted by the Center for Rising Generations at the Aspen Institute. Please note that this event is for adults over 18 and our events are targeted towards young adults between 18-30.
