About Event

VENUE NOTE: THIS WEEK IS AT ULTIMO COMMUNITY CENTRE, NOT HOUSE OF PICKLE

A relaxed weekly pickleball session for Sydney tech workers to connect, play and sweat a little.

Many folks are beginners and don't know each other yet, so don't worry about that.

If you have any questions, just message the WhatsApp group.

Logistics

  • Get your tickets via Luma. You can buy for yourself and your friends too.

  • All paddles and balls are provided.

  • There are showers available at UCC, next to reception on the ground floor.

  • We're on court 1 - on the rooftop.

Cancellations

  • You can cancel within 24 hours of the event - you'll get a credit to attend a future session. Send a WhatsApp message to Tim to cancel.

  • If it's very wet, we'll cancel it and you'll get a credit for a future session - we'll notify this through Luma via email and also our WhatsApp group. We'll make this call on the morning.

Pickleball Basic Rules & Scoring

  • Before your first time playing, please check out this 5-min video which covers the basic rules and scoring: https://youtu.be/pDDwZgepQeE

  • We'll use traditional scoring rules with games up to 11 (you need to win by 2 points).

Beginner Tips

  • Don't worry about looking silly - everyone does at the beginning.

  • Before you serve, make sure you say the score, otherwise you will quickly lose track of it.

  • Try to notice your most common mistake to improve that.

  • Try to get to the kitchen line quickly - don't hang back at the base line like tennis.

  • The serve has to be under arm 'in an upward arc' - so no downward slicing, tennis style serve or side arms.

  • The rule everyone forgets is that the ball has to land once on each side (two-bounce rule) before you can start volleying - so remember 'Serve and Stay' and 'Return and Run'.

General Etiquette

  • It's just a social game for a bit of fun, so let's keep it friendly.

  • After each game ends, change it up - e.g. swap your partner, swap courts etc. If anyone is waiting to play, they get priority to play the next game.

  • Make sure you keep score of your game so that we can keep the games turning over. It's normal to lose track a little bit, that's fine.

  • After the game is over, you touch paddles with each other player (equivalent of a handshake).
