A Poem Is a Drawing, A Photo of a Friend: A Poetry Workshop
Explore poetry as a medium of multitudes: Something of excess, something deeply personal, something widely shared.
Poetry is a free-use of language, a use of words outside of communicative utility: A poem uses language superfluously, gratuitously, sharply, round-about-ly. Too often we base our experience of writing in the concrete. Beauty is a thing of excess, of chance, and we’d do good to explore poetry as such.
Exploring the absurdity of language and experience through writing prompts, students will weave through solo and group exercises, leaving with seedlings of works to be sprouted. We will end the session with a communal tea time with light refreshments.
This workshop is built on play as praxis, open to all levels.
Program
Part 1: Lubrication Students will free-journal for five minutes.
Part 2: Know Thy Neighbor Writing poetry itself is an individual journey, but the familiarity with the world and people around us bring ease to putting sentiments on the page. A friendly environment is conducive to creativity!
Part 3: Free Association Students will begin with independent writing exercises that evolve to a group Exquisite Corpse exercise.
Part 4: Making a Poem Employing the whisper of ideas from the exercises, students will begin constructing a poem.
Part 6: Communion / Open Studio Students will have the opportunity to share what they have written. We will conclude with some communal time with light refreshments, having a chance to continue working in the space independently.
