Chisom's Book Club
Hi, I’m Chisom, and I am an avid reader. I usually read around four to six books every six weeks, and for a while I have been thinking about how much more enjoyable some of those books would be if I had a community to discuss them with.
So, I am starting a book club.
The idea is simple: one book a month, twelve books a year, and a warm, low-threshold space to connect with people from across the world, exchange perspectives, learn from one another, and discover books we might not otherwise have come across.
The book club will be genre agnostic. We will read widely, across fiction, non-fiction, memoir, essays, history, culture, business, politics, poetry and everything in between. At the same time, we will be intentional about centring books by women, people with underrepresented identities, and writers from the Global Majority.
We will meet once a month, currently on Tuesdays, although that can evolve depending on what works best for the group. Members will also be encouraged to suggest books, and we can vote together on what we want to read next. I want this to feel like a shared space rather than a reading list decided by one person.
Our first book will be Radical Justice by Nani Reventlow Jansen. We will read it together and then meet on 1 December, when Nani will join us for a conversation about the book and its ideas.
This is my first time running a book club, so I am approaching it with curiosity and openness. I hope it becomes an easy-going, thoughtful community for people who love books, good conversation, and learning from perspectives beyond their own.
