About Event

What is the phenomena of 432hz, and what does a millennium of music history have to say about it? Dan Gorelick joins Sean Russell Hallowell in conversation about the nature of sound and the history of music, with live performances opening and closing the talk.

In addition to Sean's electronic music and audio-visual installations, he has a PhD in Medieval Music theory, which took sound as a manifestation of abstract numerical relationships embodying metaphysical truths. In a similar vein, Dan's work takes somatic sound as a point of departure for re-integrating our humanity into macroscopic timescales and structures.

While the conversation covers many topics it is aimed at all audiences who are curious about sound. The rabbit-hole goes deeper than you think, covering topics such as just-intonation, resonance, physicality of sound and many more.

Schedule:

  • 7:00: Doors

  • 7:45: Opening performance

  • 8:00: Talk and Discussion

  • 9:00: Closing performance

Talk will be in-person (seating limited to 60 spots). Available also remotely!

Also, this is a natural lead-in for Sean's Max MSP workshop at TIAT on July 1st, learn how to investigate sound at a phenomenological level with industry standard software for synthesis and sequencing: https://luma.com/synth

More about Sean:

Sean Russell Hallowell (@isorhythmics) is a composer and video artist from West Sonoma County, CA. He synthesizes experimental techniques developed from handmade circuitry with a cosmic perspective on music as a conduit for physical and metaphysical energy.

His music and installations have been showcased at venues and festivals across the US as well as internationally in Mexico, Chile, South Korea, Japan, Belgium, the UK, Croatia, Poland, and Iceland. Immersive audiovisual works have been installed at galleries in San Francisco, New York City, and London.

His work is inspired by outmoded media technologies like analog tape and cathode-ray tube televisions. Through them, he explores the phenomenon of lived time in relation to the four arts of number that Medieval Europe called the “quadrivium” — music, arithmetic, geometry, and astronomy.

More about Dan:

Dan Gorelick (@dqgorelick) is an interdisciplinary artist who blends his classical cello and computation background to create immersive experiences, interactive installations, and improvisational performances. He explores how sound can create embodied and expressive works that blend acoustic, electronic, and digital techniques – finding ways to make the computer as expressive as the cello.

He is currently exploring broader definitions of technology, and how sound can allow us to connect to different timescales– spanning biological, human, geological, and beyond. His sonic work has been shared at the New Museum, La MaMa, Asian Art Museum, Gray Area, and Haus der Kulturen der Welt, and has been featured in the New York Times, and San Francisco Chronicle. He was a part of NEW INC Year 10 and 11 in the Art & Code track. Dan is now based in Brooklyn, NY with active ties to San Francisco/Bay Area and Berlin art communities.
