An Afternoon with Onir
Join National Award-winning Indian filmmaker Onir (My Brother… Nikhil, I Am) for an intimate afternoon exploring queer storytelling, authentic representation, and the power of independent cinema.
What to expect:
Onir will take you through his two-decade journey of bringing marginalised stories to screen – from My Brother Nikhil (one of the first mainstream Hindi films to address AIDS and same-sex relationships) to We Are Faheem & Karun, the first Kashmiri-language LGBTQI+ film ever made.
The session includes exclusive screenings of:
Pine Cone trailer – Onir's queer love story shot entirely on smartphones
Kaagazi Naav (17 mins) – a short film made by Kashmiri students using only smartphones
We Are Faheem & Karun trailer
You'll also hear about casting for authenticity, working with non-professional actors, and making cinema more inclusive – followed by an interactive Q&A.
BONUS: The first 6 registrants will receive a FREE ticket to the Australian premiere of We Are Faheem & Karun at Mardi Gras Film Festival (Sunday 22 February, 8:30pm, Event Cinemas George St).
Light refreshments provided.
This event supports Onir's travel to Sydney for the Mardi Gras Film Festival.
