AI Insights for Local Authority Websites: Lessons from 400 Council websites

​After being inspired at LocalGov Drupal Camp in April, David Bishop from Digital Journey Coach set out on a project aimed at helping local government teams improve their digital services. Over the past few months, he has developed an AI-powered review service designed to support content designers and UX professionals in local authorities.

The purpose is simple: to understand how well council websites help residents complete essential online tasks. Using generative AI, the project reviewed around 400 local authority websites against 12 key user journeys – from applying for school meals to reporting a missed bin. The outcome is a freely available report offering one of the most detailed overviews of local government digital experience to date.

In this session, David will share what was learned, highlight patterns and best practices, and explore opportunities where AI can help councils make their services clearer, more consistent, and easier to use.
