Community Coffee Chat and Networking in Houston's Third Ward
Participants in Houston Energy & Climate Week may join a regularly-scheduled 90-minute community meeting in Houston's Third Ward to witness bottom-up community networking. Seating is limited. Our "community coffee chat" meets weekly to share news and discuss local projects. The meeting on Sept. 19th will include:
-- Introductions (each person will introduce themselves)
-- Discussion of how informal community chats differ from formal meetings
-- Overview of the 4-mile Columbia Tap Rail-Trail green space and its role in micro-mobility
-- Three-minute video about Third Ward climate adaptation practices
-- Update on Columbia Tap Trail solar charging for e-bikes and solar lighting
-- Third Ward environmental justice and climate change initiatives
-- Community news, project updates, and announcements
For more than 140 consecutive weeks, residents of Houston's Third Ward have convened to address a full range of local challenges. The chat is respectful, detailed, and focused on building partnerships. One sponsor of the chat, the Friends of Columbia Tap, is a community-based 501(c)(3) focused on a 4-mile rails-to-trails greenspace that connects the Texas Medical Center to downtown as it traverses Houston's Historic Third Ward. This community coffee chat has served as a catalyst for similar neighborhood gatherings. Friends of Columbia Tap is developing a linear park through a park-deprived section of the city, adding trees and bioswales to cool the city and manage rainwater, and a making biking and e-bikes safer for an emerging workforce.
