Scenario: How do we finally make money from a free app?

WhatsApp has 2 billion users. It is the biggest communication tool on the planet. However, unlike Instagram or Facebook, WhatsApp generates very little revenue. It is free to use, and there are no ads. **The Problem:**Meta (the parent company) needs a Return on Investment (ROI). They spent $19 Billion to buy it, and investors are demanding that WhatsApp finally becomes a "Cash Cow.

We will gather as the "Strategy Committee" to decide how do we monetize 2 billion users without making them delete the app and switch to Telegram or Signal?

Before the meeting, the executive team prepared three possible strategies. We do not have to choose one of these exactly, but use them to start our discussion.

Option A: Insert display ads in the "Status" tab and occasionally between chat threads in the main inbox.

  • It works for Instagram. We have the data. Even if users complain, they are "locked in" because all their friends are here. It is the fastest way to make billions.

Option B: Keep the chat free and clean. Instead, turn WhatsApp into a "Super App" where you can send money, buy groceries, and book flights within the app. Take a % commission on every transaction.

  • This works perfectly in China (WeChat) and Brazil. We don't sell user data; we just facilitate commerce. It creates a massive economy.

Option C: Keep the free version, but limit it (e.g., limit file sizes or group limits). Launch "WhatsApp Plus" ($4.99/mo) for power users who want extra features and privacy controls.

  • Users say they care about privacy. Let them put their money where their mouth is. If only 5% of users pay, that’s $6 Billion a year in pure profit.
