​Join us for the soft opening of BlackMaria Gallery and the inaugural exhibition, RAW, BLACK, & BLUE, featuring new photographic work by Shantré Pinkney.

​This exhibition marks the beginning of BlackMaria Gallery's public programming and offers an opportunity to gather in the space, experience the work, and celebrate the artists and collaborators helping shape this new cultural home for radical storytelling and contemporary art.

Artist Shantre Pinkney
Inspired by hip-hop, jazz and French New Wave cinema, Shantre began her creative venture in New York and studied film-making in Atlanta, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. As a lover of non-traditional and inquisitive stories, she seeks to raise dialogue between art and audience. She creates in the mediums of photography, film, spoken word, commercials, and web tv.

BlackMaria Microcinema II
The BlackMaria Microcinema II is a 30-seat gallery and microcinema in San Francisco's Tenderloin.

​A space dedicated to the study of image, sound, and audience, BlackMaria approaches cinema as study, discourse, and disruption. The space hosts screenings, artist talks, exhibitions, and RDA (Rooted in Decolonization and Abstract Thinking) classes that cultivate radical approaches to film and storytelling.

​Named after Thomas Edison's first film production studio, the original Black Maria, founder Maria Judice reclaims its legacy to challenge exclusionary cinema histories—asking whose stories are told, who gets to tell them, and how we remain rooted in ourselves when telling them. We like to imagine Edison turning in his grave.

​A project of Indigofera, the BlackMaria is a creative meditation on place, space, and community.
