AI, Society and Systems at the Edge of Change
On 9 September at 17:00 CEST, I will have the pleasure of moderating a 30-minute conversation with Dr. Nicoleta J. Economou-Zavlanos, Director of Duke Health AI Evaluation & Governance, on what it takes to move from responsible AI principles to practical governance in healthcare.
Nicoleta brings extensive experience in the evaluation, oversight and responsible implementation of AI in health systems. She is the founding Director of Duke’s Algorithm-Based Clinical Decision Support Oversight initiative and has contributed to AI governance work with organisations including the World Health Organization, the NIH Bridge2AI Program and the Coalition for Health AI.
The session, “From Principles to Practice: Governing AI in Healthcare,” is part of AI, Society and Systems at the Edge of Change, a webinar series exploring how AI is transforming sectors, systems and institutions, and how we can make use of its potential while developing the governance needed to manage its risks.
We will explore what health systems should assess before introducing an AI solution into clinical practice, how multidisciplinary governance can work in practice, how AI should be monitored and reassessed throughout its lifecycle, and what lessons from health-system governance can inform national and international approaches to responsible AI

About Pr. Nicoleta J. Economou-Zavlanos, PhD
Nicoleta J. Economou-Zavlanos, PhD, is the Director of the Duke Health AI Evaluation & Governance Program and the founding director of the Algorithm-Based Clinical Decision Support (ABCDS) Oversight initiative. Additionally, she is an Assistant Professor in the Duke Department of Biostatistics & Bioinformatics.
Through her various positions, Dr. Economou leads Duke Health’s efforts to drive the responsible integration of AI in healthcare by establishing robust evaluation frameworks and oversight practices.
Dr. Economou has consulted for organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), specifically the EU Quality of Care and Patient Safety Office, advising on how AI can help improve healthcare delivery without compromising the safety of patients. Because of her expertise in AI governance, she was invited to be a part of the U.S. Speakers Program, where she educates foreign decision-makers and policy-makers on responsible AI practices. Dr. Economou has served on the Executive Committee of the NIH Bridge2AI Program, contributing to U.S. initiatives that advance AI-driven biomedical research as well as other advisory boards.
She also served as the Scientific Director for the Coalition for Health AI (CHAI), where she played a key role in developing consensus-driven guidance for responsible AI in healthcare, convening experts across industry, academia and the government. A recognized leader in health AI governance, she has played a pivotal role in developing frameworks to operationalize responsible AI and shape policies for ethical AI deployment, both in the U.S. and abroad.
Dr. Economou’s research is published in NPJ Digital Medicine, JAMA, JAMA Health Forum, and JAMIA, underscores her commitment to responsible AI innovation.
