About Event

L’Asilo, Creating Space for Care is a documentary focused on the commons space the Ex Asilo Filangeri, located in the heart of Napoli, which will be used as a basis for comparison with the volunteer-run artist collective 8-Ball, located in New York.

Conversation with Silvia Lucia Cohn and Lele Saveri to follow.

8-Ball Community is proud to partner with Index to screen the film L’Asilo: Creating Space for Care, a documentary that tells the story of the commons space L’Asilo, based in Naples. Focusing on a time of change in their history, this documentary examines the structure, pitfalls ,and progress this artists' collective has gone through.

There are parallels evident between L’Asilo and 8-Ball Community, and we want this screening to begin a dialogue about what it means to be a part of these kinds of spaces.

Stick around after the film for a conversation between Silvia Lucia Cohn, an inhabitant of L’Asilo featured in the film, and Lele Saveri, founder of 8-Ball Community.

Program

Doors at 7:00pm, screening at 7:30pm (50 minute runtime) with conversation to follow.

Facilitators

Silvia Lucia Cohn is a designer who works on eco-social projects and is specialized in designing and facilitating participatory processes. She also has experience in education and activism that overlap with her work as well as personal time.

Silvia has been an inhabitant/activist of L’Asilo since 2022. She is from New York but of Neapolitan origin, specifically from Procida and Ischia.

Lele Saveri is an Italian-born photographer and community organizer based in New York City.

Saveri’s work has been exhibited in various institutions, including MoMA (New York), FOAM (Amsterdam), MARCO (Rome), the Brooklyn Museum, among others.

In 2012, Saveri co-founded 8-Ball Community, an art collective and non-hierarchical organization that supports independent art and self-publishing in New York City and beyond.

Nicolas Umpierrez is an artist from Queens, New York City who focuses on work with the still and moving image. With a practice that varies from analogue photography to digital filmmaking, he is fascinated by the recorded image.

Since 2022 he’s been involved with 8-Ball Community, particularly with 8-Ball Television programming original content for the 8-Ball TV website and putting together community screenings.

8-Ball Community began as a series of parties in the Grand Billiards pool hall in Williamsburg, Brooklyn circa 2012. What first started out as a series of parties for their friends to come together, play music, exchange work (usually zines) and ideas grew into an organic network of artists and activists who would organize events around shared goals and ambitions. 8-Ball Community continues to expand today.
