Introducing the Brazilian Football Sustainability Index

September 21, 2026 | New York City

Football is more than a sport. In Brazil, it is one of the country’s most influential social, cultural and economic platforms—connecting millions of people and bringing together clubs, athletes, supporters, communities, sponsors, businesses, media organizations and public institutions.

During Climate Week NYC 2026, this strategic dialogue will introduce the Brazilian Football Sustainability Index (IBSF) and explore how measurement, evidence and accountability can help make sustainability an integral part of football management.

Developed by Movimento Sustentabilidade em Campo (MSeC), the IBSF is an annual initiative initially focused on the 40 clubs competing in Brazil’s Série A and Série B national championships.

Rather than creating a conventional ranking, the Index is designed as a management, benchmarking and transformation tool. It will help clubs understand their current performance, identify strengths and gaps, compare practices against sector benchmarks and establish pathways for continuous improvement.

Why This Conversation Matters

Football organizations around the world face growing expectations around governance, environmental responsibility, human rights, diversity, inclusion and social impact.

This meeting will bring together selected leaders and international stakeholders to discuss how sustainability assessment can contribute to better football management and broader societal impact.

The conversation will explore:

  • the most relevant sustainability challenges facing football organizations;

  • how data and evidence can improve management and decision-making;

  • international practices that could inform the development of the IBSF;

  • ways to translate sustainability commitments into measurable action;

  • opportunities for technical cooperation, knowledge exchange and future partnerships;

  • the role of clubs, sponsors, governing bodies and investors in accelerating change.

The session is not intended to present a finished model or seek formal endorsement. It is an invitation to contribute perspectives that can strengthen the IBSF as it moves toward implementation.

Institutional Partners

The IBSF was conceived and developed by Marcelo Linguitte, CEO and co-founder of Movimento Sustentabilidade em Campo (MSeC), which leads the initiative’s development and overall coordination.

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) is an institutional partner and will support key stages of implementation, including validation of the assessment questionnaire, engagement with Série A and Série B clubs, and presentation of the inaugural IBSF report.

The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) will lead the independent audit and verification process, including the review of material issues and supporting documentation submitted by participating clubs.

Nativa will provide pro bono technical support during selected stages of the project’s development and implementation.

Join us in New York for a forward-looking conversation on how football can move from isolated initiatives to measurable, responsible and continuously improving management practices.
