Goodbye Politicians, Hello Democracy Film Screening

​What if you randomly selected average Americans and had them deliberate on what to do about a complex, contentious political issue? Well in fall of 2020, during the height of COVID lockdowns, that's exactly what Adam Cronkite did. 30 randomly selected Michiganders, stratified by demographics, gathered on Zoom for six weeks to come up with a set of recommendations for the state government on what to do about COVID. These deliberations, plus the personal diaries recorded by these delegates, became the film Goodbye Politicians, Hello Democracy.

​This film explores the idea of "sortition democracy," or government by bodies of randomly selected citizens. We'll begin with a brief primer, then watch the 75 minute film, and follow up with a discussion.
